Chaka Camp offers an authentic bush camp experience in the heart of the Serengeti. With only a strip of canvas to separate the wildlife from your hugely comfortable bed, the sounds of the bush will lull you to sleep each night. In the morning, wake-up with a coffee, over-looking a zebra herd and then head off on a game drive that starts immediately. The staff clearly love it out here and nothing is too much trouble. With three decades of Tanzanian tourism experience between them, it’s no wonder that Hezron and Stacy have managed to create such a perfect safari haven. Their team at Chaka Camp are extremely welcoming, nothing is too much trouble and the happy nature of everyone really enhances your stay.

Chaka Camp is located in the Ndutu area from December through to March, and then relocates to Kogatende in Northern Serengeti from May to November. Chaka Camp’s location provides easy access to prime game viewing areas around Lakes Ndutu and Masek. In addition to the almost two million wildebeest and zebra that move through the area each year, Ndutu is home to cheetah, lion, giraffe and hundreds of bird species. During February’s calving season, the wildebeest give birth to 8,000 babies a day. From May through November, Chaka Camp relocates to Kogatende in Northern Serengeti. This area offers year-round game viewing and is thought to be one of the best places in Africa to spot large cats.

With just ten tents, Chaka – meaning ‘bush’ in Swahili – follows the wildebeest migration, covering hundreds of kilometres as it moves seasonally around the Serengeti. The tents may be lightweight enough to move a few times a year, but they certainly don’t lack in amenities and comfort. The interiors are simple and stylish with a classic African safari feel. Room fabrics are handwoven African designs, and the camp’s furniture was commissioned and crafted by artisans in Arusha, Tanzania. Each tent is en-suite with flushing loos with hot bucket showers to order!

The food at Chaka is fantastic with a varied and delicious selection of food at each meal made from Hezron and Stacy’s organically grown herbs, fruits and vegetables. It’s amazing what the team can cook up in the bush! And all meals and water are included. With a campfire each night and bush TV on tap, there really is nothing better than to sit in a comfortable chair, glass of wine in hand looking out across the vastness of the Serengeti and watch animals pass right by the camp.
