Located in the Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh, 30 minutes from the temples of Khajuraho and just 2kms from the Panna Tiger Reserve, the Sarai at Toria sits in 9 acres of unspoilt countryside on the banks of the beautiful Ken River, a large tributary of the mighty Yamuna.

The accommodation consists of 8 thatched cottages with private verandas, built in an earthy natural design using traditional methods and locally sourced materials such as mud, bamboo and stone, to minimize the environmental impact. This does not in any way compromise on comfort as lovely rustic mud walls hide the elegant, contemporary design of the spacious interiors. In 4 of the cottages you have tucked away mezzanine bed spaces for children so they are perfect for families!

At the highest point of the estate you have an open dining room and lounge area with commanding views of the Ken River, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy the delicious home cooking, relax on a sofa with a good book and soak up those stunning sunrise and sundowner moments.

With its tranquil surroundings and forest hideaways perfect for relaxation and private al fresco lunches, it is tempting to simply laze at Sarai at Toria, however there are some gentle activities in house that include boat trips on the Ken River (highly recommended), countryside walks and guided birding excursions.

With Panna Tiger Reserve so close by and Raghu’s expertise as a biologist in tiger conservation, it’s hard to give the park a miss and guided safaris can easily be arranged. Further afield a visit to Ajaygarh Fort is highly recommended with its rarely visited temples which are even older than Khajuraho!
