Elke & Chaminda, owners, Niyagama House

Located 9kms inland from the historical Galle Fort and only 25 minutes from the southern beaches of the Indian Ocean, Niyagama House is a calm oasis set on the highest point of an active 9 acre tea plantation.  The house was designed and completed in 2012 by husband and wife team, Elke and Chaminda, combining modern elements with traditional Sri Lankan design and features an inner courtyard, high ceilings, airy rooms and verandas that look out onto the pool and tropical gardens that surround the house.

The 7 bright and airy rooms at Niyagama House are located on the 1^st and 2^nd floor and feature beautiful canopy beds draped in colourful textiles, en suite bathrooms with rain-dance showers and all have wonderful views of the plantations, with 3 featuring private balconies. The house also offers plenty of space to relax with 3 verandas, a lounge with a sunset balcony, large pool and roof terrace with 360 degree panoramic views.

Niyagama describes the “Kitchen as the Heart of the House” and like the entire Niyagama experience, lots of thought and passion has gone into making meals a special experience for guests.  The yummy breakfasts on the veranda, traditional curry lunches and romantic candlelit dinners on the roof terrace have a strong emphasis on fresh organic ingredients and are simply delicious – don’t miss the chance to join the team for a curry cooking class during your stay!

Elke is a wonderful hostess who is on always hand to help plan and make suggestions for your stay. Some of the fantastic local activities & excursions include guided or unguided treks through the plantation, birding walks, tea picking & tasting, cooking classes, guided cycling tours into the village and further afield a cycle to Wijaya Beach for lunch – don’t worry Elke will arrange for the bikes to be picked up at the beach and you can return by tuk-tuk!

As a qualified yoga instructor Elke also offers a range of yoga classes & courses to suit all levels, including sunrise meditation sessions, Hatha & Vinyasa Flow Yoga and newly introduced to Sri Lanka by Elke, Aerial Yoga, which supports the body using fabric hammocks suspended from the ceiling!
