Kenya’s numerous game reserves and conservancies offer game viewing that is second to none. Whether you are looking to experience your first safari, or whether you are a hardy safari goer wishing to head off the beaten track – Kenya has something for everyone. The key is knowing where to go, to experience Kenya without the crowds. The Wildebeest Migration takes place in Kenya from July to October as the herds pass from the neighbouring Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara. We know the conservancies on the edge of the Masai Mara where you can see the Migration without a jam of 4×4’s, just a lone acacia tree posing in the background of the endless savannah. These conservancies, dotted around Kenya’s national parks and reserves, offer a way to bring the benefits of tourism to the local tribal community as well as encouraging wildlife conservation. Ask us about the best conservancies for your Kenya Safari Holiday.
As well as traditional safari, Kenya is sliced down the middle by the Great Rift Valley. The valley is bordered by escarpments and broken by volcanoes and a series of lakes. The lakes just north-of Nairobi can be visited as an add-on to a safari and are particularly recommended for birders. Or you could climb the dormant Mount Kenya, the second highest mountain in Africa. Or head further north, off the beaten track, to Lake Turkana, the world’s largest desert lake, hailed by many anthropologists as the cradle of humankind due to the abundance of hominid fossils.
If you are just looking to relax or have some down time after your safari, Kenya’s gorgeous tropical coastline offers fantastic snorkelling & diving, superb fishing, a huge variety of watersports, swimming with dolphins and sunset dhow cruises. Head to Lamu for old buildings, no traffic and arab culture. Or place yourself on a deserted beach and just admire the view of white sandy beaches lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.
As well as sights, encounters with the local tribespeople of Kenya can form a highlight of your Kenya holiday. Learn about the problems of leading a semi-nomadic Masai life in a modern world. Or about the Samburu god, Nkai, who is believed to dwell in beautiful mountains, large trees, caverns, and water springs. With over 40 different cultures, each with its own values, language, traditional dress and ways of life, these planned or unplanned interactions are a fascinating insight into Kenya’s true character.
“Verity has been leading safaris all over Africa since the early 1980’s, and she still guides the odd safari now. Verity chose to make the beautiful Sabuk her bush home and her enthusiasm & passion for the wild, becomes obvious in her creation of activities and Camel Safaris on the Laikipia Plateau”.
“”We fell in love with this place in 2004, bought a plot on the seaside, and built from scratch our lodge, the place where we choose to live and host guests. We never regret we did, and still today, driving our guests and friends around, we are constantly surprised by the beauty of this land”.
“Having lived in the Masai Mara for 10 years, I have a strong passion for providing our guests with an authentic off-the-beaten track safari experience. With Enkewa Camp in a privileged location & with genuine, committed Masai staff, I feel I am living my dream.”
We had an amazing time and saw so many animals including the migration and two river crossings. It far exceeded our expectations and we would definitely recommend both the lodges/camps and you to our friends. Hopefully we can go back again one day!
An absolutely amazing holiday. We were lucky to have some of the best wildlife experiences ever, including a cheetah kill and seeing her bring her cubs over to consume the kill – mesmerising. Then the migration and crossings were incredible to witness. And everyone welcomed the kids with open arms and treated them brilliantly despite their fussy eating! Thanks for the organisation Not sure how we can top the holiday in future.
I cannot say enough good things about Saruni Samburu. The rooms are huge with breathtaking views. What separated Saruni from everywhere else was the staff and level of service. It was amazing to have members of the Samburu tribe as the staff. We learnt a lot about their way of life while in camp. The food is incredible, the guides were amazing.
A once in a lifetime experience. The combination of the Mara, the Maasai people and the wildlife delivered the real Africa at its very best. Thank you for a unique and amazing holiday.
We could not fault a thing about our trip. The Mara safari, the air balloon ride and Diani Beach were just perfect and exceeded all our expectations! It has certainly been a special time, all made the more memorable by the amazing staff we met along the way. We cannot thank you enough.
I was not prepared for what the Mara, the wildlife and the Masai people deliver in terms of the full and real safari experience. We had an amazing time and totally fell in love with Kenya.
The trip was awesome…we loved the camp, the view was amazing and we found that every trip into the Masai Mara we saw something new (except for the infamous leopards!).
“I love the variety of opportunities that travelling gives you – new experiences, different cultures, incredible scenery and amazing food!”
“I’ve always loved travelling and exploring, but really got the travel bug after backpacking in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia back in 2013!”
