Day 1: UK to Sandakan
Fly from London to Sandakan, via Kuala Lumpur.
Day 2: Sandakan to Sepilok
On arrival into Sandakan where you will be transferred to Sepilok to stay for 2 nights at Sepilok Nature Resort. Hidden amongst tropical plants and towering trees, Sepilok Nature Resort is the perfect spot to start your Borneo jungle adventure. Want to start with a few nights in Kuala Lumpur? We can tailor this holiday idea to you.
Day 3: Sepilok
This morning you’ll have a chance to relax and recover from your travels. You could head to Labuk Bay to the Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary located at the centre of a mangrove forest with around 300 wild monkeys. We recommend going for feeding time. This afternoon, head to the Rainforest Discovery Centre visiting the canopy towers connected by walkways to give you a bird’s-eye view of the rooftops of the trees. We also recommend a night walk to spot some of the nocturnal wildlife.
Day 4: Sepilok to Kinabatangan
This morning you will visit the world’s largest orangutan rehabilitation centre at Sepilok as well as the Sun Bear Conservation Centre. You will then cruise to Sabah’s mighty Kinabatangan River to Sukau Rainforest Lodge where you will be staying for 2 nights with all meals included. Situated on the banks of the Kinabatangan River and one of National Geographic’s Unique Lodges of the World; an award only given for outstanding wildlife, conservation and community programmes; Sukau Rainforest Lodge adds a splash of luxury to such a remote location.
In the afternoon you will enjoy a guided river safari in search of pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys, orangutans and more! And in the evening you’ll head out for a jungle at night guided tour for more wildlife tracking.
Want to spend longer on the river? Call 01273 923100 to tailor this holiday to you.
Days 5: Kinabatangan
Wake up early for an unmissable morning cruise on the Kinabatangan River. Watch the jungle slowly waking up in the mist and enjoy the wildlife search. After breakfast, proceed for an educational tour along the Hornbill Boardwalk located behind the lodge with the in-house naturalist. And in the afternoon, you will head on another river cruise for more wildlife viewing opportunities.
Day 6: Sukau to the Danum Valley
After breakfast you will be transferred overland to the luxury Borneo Rainforest Lodge where you will be staying for 2 nights. On the edge of 438 sq. km of undisturbed lowland rainforest, the lodge is home to the full range of Sabah’s lowland fauna, including the rare Sumatran Rhinoceros, Elephants, Clouded Leopards, and Orang Utans. Enjoy an afternoon walk along the trails and up in the canopy walk, and an exhilarating night spotlighting tour in an open-top 4WD vehicle.
Day 7: Danum Valley
Taking a packed breakfast, you will walk to a 200-year-old Kadazandusun Burial Site along the 2.6km View Point Trail. You’ll stop at the waterfalls to enjoy a refreshing dip in the pools below on the way back to your lodge for your delicious lunch. Explore the series of tracks leading around the Canopy Walk, or any of the optional activities available at the lodge. After dinner, venture into the jungle on foot with a local guide to spot a stunning array of wildlife.
Day 8: Danum to Gaya Island
After a guided morning walk you will be transferred to Lahad Datu airport for your onward flight to Kota Kinabalu. On arrival you will be met and transferred to the jetty for your boat to the gorgeous Gaya Island. You will be spending your last 5 nights at Gaya Island Resort with breakfast included. Set within a marine park with a golden beach and backed by lush rainforest, Gaya Island Resort is the perfect luxurious beach retreat to kick-back after your tour of Borneo.
