This 13 day self-drive tour explores the very best wildlife, adventure and dramatic landscapes of Namibia. Head to the world’s oldest desert with its specially evolved plants and animals before climbing Dune 45 as the sunrises in Sossusvlei, cross wild landscapes, explore rugged coastlines and search out desert Elephant in the ancient mountain ranges of Damaraland. Venture into the spectacular Etosha Nature Reserve in search of the Africa Big 5 before finishing, sundowner in hand, with the sunsetting over the Waterberg plains. Day 1: UK to Windhoek
Fly overnight from the UK to Windhoek (via Johannesburg)
Day 2: Windhoek
On arrival into Windhoek you will collect your hire car and drive into the city where you will spend 1 night at Villa Violet, perfectly located to head out and explore the city from or relax and cool off in the pool.
Day 3: Windhoek to the Namib Desert
This morning you will drive 5 hours into the Namib Desert (en route you can stop at Solitaire and enjoy an apple tart to die for!). You will spend the next 2 nights at the Elegant Desert Camp overlooking the Namibian savannah and surrounded by the Tsaris mountains. Enjoy a first Sundowner looking out across the vast wilderness of the Namib Desert! Want to add in a night in the Kalahari Desert? Ask us to tailor this itinerary for you.
Day 4: Namib Desert
A free day to explore the Namib Desert. Why not wake up early and head into the park to climb Dune45 as the sunrises, explore Deadvlei or marvel at the famous dunes of Sossusvlei. We can also arrange excursions to the dunes with a guide or for something extra special you could enjoy a hot air balloon ride over this incredible landscape.
Day 5: Namib Desert to Swakopmund
Today you will drive 5 hours via Kuiseb Canyon to Swakopmund, you could head to see the “Moon Landscape” and the ancient desert plant “Welwitschia mirabilis” en route. Arriving in Swakopmund you will spend 2 nights at Cornerstone Guest House, a super relaxed boutique guesthouse located within walking distance of restaurants as well as the beachfront – this place does a serious breakfast!
Day 6: Swakopmund
A free day to enjoy this area. You could head to Walvis Bay to enjoy a boat cruise or kayak to get up close to flamingos, seals, dolphins and whales. Day 7: Swakopmund to Damaraland
This morning you will drive north along the Atlantic Coast, you could stop en route to marvel at the huge seal colonies at Cape Cross and again when you reach southern Skeleton Coast Park. Before continuing inland to Grootberg Lodge where you will be staying for 2 nights. The lodge is perched on the edge of the Etendeka volcanic plateau. A picture perfect spot, with fantastic views and wildlife viewing. Want to slow the pace down, ask us to lengthen your stays or remove stops. Call 01273 923100.
Day 8: Damaraland
A free day to enjoy this area. Grootberg lodge offers some fantastic activities including a Damara Cultural Tour, Guided Walks, an afternoon Scenic drive and Desert Elephant or Rhino tracking. From the lodge you could also choose to drive 2 hours to the UNESCO World Heritage ancient rock engravings site in Twyfelfontein.
Day 9: Damaraland to Etosha
Today you will drive 3 hours to the outskirts of Etosha National Park. You are going to stay for 1 night at Vreugde Guest Farm a small family run business offering elegant and comfortable accommodation on the outskirts of Etosha. This afternoon relax in the beautiful flourishing gardens on the farm and have a cool in the pool, or head (30minutes) into the park and spend the afternoon enjoying a self-drive safari spotting wildlife in Etosha National Park.
Day 10: Etosha South to Etosha East
This morning you will drive 4 hours to East Etosha where you will spend your next 2 nights at Onguma Bush Camp which is situated perfectly to explore this side of the park, and has its own waterhole which large herds of impala, jackals, kudu and warthogs regularly visit. Spend the afternoon enjoying a self-drive safari.
Day 11: Etosha East
Have today at leisure. There are plenty of ways to enjoy this wildlife rich reserve. You can add onto your stay guided game drives (AM & PM) with an expert guide to take you out in search of the Etosha Big 5. Add an afternoon sunset nature drive and stop for an unforgettable sundowner chosen carefully by your naturalist guide, to witness the sunset in this special area after an afternoon of wildlife tracking.
Day 12: Etosha East to Waterberg Plateau
This morning you will head 3 hours south to Frans Indongo where you will stay 1 night on the edge of the Waterberg plateau in this traditional Ovambo Village style lodge. Head out this afternoon to explore Waterberg Plateau home to hundred of animal and bird species. Or you could choose to visit the Cheetah Conservation Fund, to experience these incredible cats and the important conservation work being done for their protection. Head to the watch tower where you can spot wildlife as the sunsets over this stunning landscape.
Day 13: Mount Etjo to Windhoek Airport
This morning you will drive 4 hours to Windhoek airport where you will drop your hire car and check in for your flight back to the UK (via Johannesburg). Welcome Home!
